Pierce Arrow held a Patent on fender mounted headlights. Any
\nmanufacturer wanting to mount their lights on the fenders would have to pay a Royalty to Pierce. This Patent helped to standardize the front view of cars for twenty years. After 1934 cars could incorporate Headlights into their fenders, by 1940 most cars had them mounted in the fenders and Pierce Arrow was out of business for two years.\u00a0Interestingly New York Law Makers were so convinced that car headlights belonged close to the radiator that they made it a law. Every Pierce Arrow sold to a New Yorker had to be fitted with Headlights that conformed to this law.<\/p>\n

Pierce Arrow Cars were manufactured in Buffalo New York. http:\/\/www.pierce-arrow.org\/museums\/index.php<\/a> .\u00a0The company originally manufactured household products 1846-1910 including gilded birdcages, then bicycles (1896) steam powered cars\u00a0and a \u201cMotorette\u201d were tried. In 1904 Pierce targeted larger more luxurious cars,\u201d The Great Arrow\u201d. In 1905 Percy Pierce won the \u201cGlidden Trophy\u201d\u00a0an 1100 mile endurance run from New York City to Breton Woods New Hampshire.<\/p>\n

The Factory designed by Albert Kahn is part of the National Historic\u00a0Registry https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierce_Arrow_Factory_Complex<\/a>.<\/p>\n

President W.H. Taft ordered two Pierce Arrows to be used as the first\u00a0Official cars of the White House. In 1910 George N Pierce died. In 1912 Herbert M. Dawley joined Pierce Arrow and designed every model until its closing in 1938.\u00a0In 1914 the Motorcycle line was eliminated and the most important styling element was established \u201cFender Mounted Headlights\u201d.
